Adam Lambert - One. / Kris Allen - Heartless.
Disclaimer: As usual, lifeless. Don't judge me. I nearly cried. Again. Because of Adam's performance. I don't have any major complaints regarding the performances or the judging this week. This week was actually pretty good, including Danny.... as much as I hate to admit. THE MOST INTENSE RESULTS SHOW I'VE EVER SEEN. OMG. My heart was pounding the whole time. AND OMG IT WAS ASKLFJASLJFLSKAJFLAS. AND MY HEART BROKE WATCHING THE HOMECOMING VIDEOS. SRSLY. Results show and studio recordings will get a separate post because if not, this post will be disgustingly long.
Yes, I was insane enough (and desperate enough) to wake up at 8am just to watch the live broadcast of the show online. And then I watched it again.... At 8pm. On Star World. Because it just looks so much better on my TV than compared to my computer screen. AND OMG AMERICANS HAVE THE BEST COMMERCIALS EVER. SALKFJALSJFLASF. "WELCOME TO THE BILL BUTTER SHOW! GUARANTEED TO TASTE LIKE BUTTER OR YOUR NEXT BUTTER STICK IS ON US!" LOLOLOLOLOL.
Theme: Judges Choice and Contestant's Choice. They ditched the 3 song format usually reserved for the Top 3. No mentor this week.
This. Is.American Idol. In my opinion, still partially, The Adam Lambert Show. But now I've made some minor altercations.
This. Is. The Adam Lambert & Kris Allen Show. I say we call it a tie.

1) Judge's Choice (Paula Abdul): "Dance, Little Sister" by Terence Trent D'Arby
Danny starts off the show with a rather upbeat, soul funk number. Paula said she chose this song because she feels that Danny has this "magical quality in his voice" needed to pull it off.
I don't know this song. I've never heard of it in my life. Why pick a song that no one knows? I've never even heard of Terence Trent D'Arby. I had to look his name up in order to spell it. No joke. I may not be a fan of Danny's but I don't think choosing a less obscure song is a good idea when it comes to the Top 3. Or maybe it's just me who didn't know the song!
It's a pretty decent song, but Danny pushed his way through it like a raging bull in a china shop. Total lack of phrasing and he has issues with breath control. Very shouty in my opinion and his voice sounds kind of shot, hoarser than usual. Starts off somewhat strange, but it gets much more bearable as the performance goes on. The saxophone solo in the middle was funky though with Danny throwing in a couple of scats for good measure. But it sounded strange because the saxaphone was outshining him. Not good.
Overall, it was a mediocre performance. Doesn't prove that he deserves to be in the finals. Danny is such a white boy though. He can't dance to save his life. BRINGS THE LULZ.
Randy says, "Let the games begin," "lots of energy…that was dope for me.” Kara didn't like the dancing and points out, "Will I remember that performance tomorrow?” Very good point. Paula says, “I'm a choreographer and I think you dance great!" Uh. No. "You let that magic part of your voice carry through the rest of the song.” Simon didn't like the dancing either. Lol. "Vocally, very, very good. Although I wouldn’t have put the toy saxophone solo in". He thinks it's the wrong song choice. I agree.
First dramatic moment at the judges table: Paula and Simon start arguing. Simon tries to smother Paula with his hand. LOLTASTIC.
2) Contestant's Choice: "You Are So Beautiful" by Joe Cocker.
Danny blabs on and on about how hard it was to pick a song. Shush and get on with it, Danny.
I don't know the song very well. All I know is the line, "You are so beautiful, to me." Yes. Just that line. Oh well.
Total 180 degree from his first performance. Instead of plowing his way through, he starts off soft and sweet. Now, this is the side of Danny that I prefer over that gritty shouting thing he does all the time. He changed up the arrangement, giving it a more gospel/r&b feel. The most refined arrangement he's done all season. Props to that. The style suits his voice pretty well. Starts to pick up momentum midway, aaaaaannnnnddddd cue nitty, gritty shouting. Although, it's actually a lot more bearable here. Still some problems with breath control, his penultimate note sounded like he ran out of breath midway and couldn't finish it. I have to give him credit for connecting with the song, though. It obviously means something to him.
Not bad, Danny. Not bad at all. I actually think, this was his best performance all season. I still don't want you in the finals though.
Randy says, “Amazing song. You showed you’re here because you can really sing.” Kara calls it, "Stunning.” Paula says, “You left all of us breathless. Beautiful.” Simon says, “I wouldn’t have re-arranged it. But, since this is a singing competition…I would call that a vocal masterclass.” I DISAGREE. Sometimes I wonder if he just noticed that little fact about this being a singing competition (RE: ALLISON AND HER BEING "BORING" WHICH SHE IS NOT).

This. Is.
This. Is. The Adam Lambert & Kris Allen Show. I say we call it a tie.
- Ryan announces that this is the show's 300th episode. Yay!
- The first all-male Top 3 in the entire history of Idol.
- Ryan also reveals midway through the show, that Idol Gives Back garnered ...a lot of money, (in the millions. I don't know the ex for charity. There's this little clip showing Carrie Underwood on her trip to Angola, Africa and omg it was precious. I love Carrie. <3>
- Performance order: Danny. Kris. Adam. Rinse and repeat.

1) Judge's Choice (Randy Jackson & Kara DioGuardi): "Apologize" by One Republic
Is it just me, or did this seem like they were trying to throw a bus at him? Again?
Randy picked the song for Kris because it’s a “big song with a big range he’s got a big voice." I kind of disagree. Kris doesn't exactly have the biggest range out of all the contestants, but hey! Whatever floats your boat, Randy. Kara picked it because, “Everybody knows the song with its dark beautiful melodic lines. He seems to excel at that and it's open for interpretation." Basically, the perfect choice for the dark horse of the competition, Ryan points out. Oh, and when Kris got the text back in his hometown, I totally noticed the glammed out, painted dark blue nail on Kris' right hand. :D That nail has got "Adam" written all over it. <3333
Kris breaks out the piano for the second time this season (I want that piano) and though I love the original, the song choice isn't working out entirely to his advantage. He has a little bit of trouble with the falsettos, but when he hits the lower notes, it's extremely powerful. Pretty straight arrangement, might have helped to jazz it up a bit one way or the other.
It's an alright performance but that's what kills me because Kris can do so much better. I still want that Kradam finale. The Powers That Be (TPTB) have already deprived me of a Kradison Top 3, DO NOT DENY ME MY KRADAM FINALE. Another thing that bothers me is the piano's position. There were hardly any decent shots they could get of his pretty, pretty face. SABOTAGE.
Randy says, "You could have a song like this on the radio. Nice. Very nice. " Kara says, “I think it was a good performance but at this point in the competition, you need to swing it out of th ball park.” Apparently she wanted him to change up the arrangement more. Paula says, “It sits in the right place in your voice. There was a bum note there that was loud, but I'm so proud of you.” What loud bum note? I didn't hear any bum note. Seriously. What bum note? I relistened to the performance at least another 20 times and I didn't hear any bum note. WAS SHE TALKING ABOUT HIS FALSETTO?? OMG PAULA. That is not a bum note! Simon calls Kara out, saying she's a "cop out". “You can’t choose a song for him, and then blame him for doing the song. It was a competent version of the song. You should have worked out the arrangement…you aren’t holding up your responsibilities.” I didn't get this at first, but apparently one of the AI backup singers twittered this (source: mjsbigblog):
2) Contestant's Choice: Kanye West's "Heartless".
When I heard that Kris was going to do this song, the little voice in my head was thinking that he would either crash and burn or be phenomenal.
And he was, PHENOMENAL. Hands down, one of the best performances of the season, best performance of the night along with Adam's performance of "One". And I don't usually say that because I'm totally biased towards Adam, but it was that good. It took me a few re-watches to come to that conclusion, but honestly, it tops "Falling Slowly" and "Ain't No Sunshine" by a mile.
Or a hundred.
He totally stripped it down, got rid of Bandzilla, brought out his guitar and got his groove on, which was something he needed to do in order to stand out. To be able to turn an auto-tuned to hell, rap song into a pop-acoustic tune is basically what Kara has been raving on and on and on about all season: artistry. It was unique. It was riveting. The most exquisite phrasing I have ever heard from Kris, with perfect tone and perfect pitch. A total turn around from the first performance, proving that he totally deserves to be where he is. I think that Kris really put everything he had into the performance. He just threw everything he had onto the table and you can tell that he wants this so bad to the point where he's taking fearless risks that could either make or break him. And thank GOD that it worked out so well.
Randy says, "This is gonna be one of the toughest voting night. It was better than Kanye! You are in it to win it.” DAMN STRAIGHT IT WAS BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL. Kara says, “It was bold, it was brave it was fearless. Why didn’t you do that with the first song?! Amazing.” Paula says, “This is what keeps you relevant. Bravo.” Simon says, “After what I thought was a lame song choice, I had literally written you out of this competition, that has all changed after that performance.” OMG SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE. NO MORE BUS THROWING FOR KRIS! Thanks for the pimpage.

Is it just me, or did this seem like they were trying to throw a bus at him? Again?

In short, the backstory to what Simon said to Kara. I was told that all theBasically, only Simon turned up to help Adam with his arrangement. Sooooo, yeah. Kara, keep quiet if you're not going to deliver.
judges were given the opportunity to work with each kid…they were told the time slot for each kid’s rehearsal. They could come & advice the contestant on how to get the most of their song. But on rehearsal day, only one judge actually showed up and did that… guess which one.”

1) Judge's Choice (Simon Cowell): U2's "One"
Simon says he chose the song because it's one of his favourite songs ever and that the song took awhile to clear. Bono personally called him up saying it would be "his pleasure" for Adam to sing it. I love that Simon chose this song. HE DID SOMETHING RIGHT.
Swathed in a blue light similar to his "Mad World" performance, it's just him and a piano as he starts off the song soft and slow. Not a lot of guyliner on for this performance and his outfit is rather understated than compared to his gaudier outfits. I LOVE. The beginning is absolutely beautiful and the lyrics shine through with his interpretation of the song. The band and background singers come in gently as the song picks up momentum. I love that he made it a slow ballad sort of song rather than sticking to the original and I actually like the change in melody. And then there's the glory note. Because no Adam performance is ever complete without a glory note.
The glory note deserves a paragraph of its own. I know a lot of people don't like the fact that he "screams" but you can start telling me that when you can do a pitch-perfect one like he does. Then you can flame Adam for all I care. In the words of Kristen Baldwin, it's not easy to scream musically! But back to the note. I actually believe that Adam felt the song inside out and it totally shows from the way he delivered it. That one note, had all of his raw emotions rolled into it and I honestly, felt so much passion in that performance and the lyrics are just beautiful, it made me want to FREAKING CRY. SRSLY. That's how freaking emotional I was. I totally felt it, I really did. BRILLIANT.
Randy says, “Dude, let me just say, you are definitely still in the zone. Unbelievable, but didn’t like you going off the melody. That said, you are a really talented guy.” I love the melody change. D: Kara says, “Adam you are a strategist. You can change up the melodies, change up the instruments and make it unbelievable.” Paula says, “It was one brilliant song, one brilliant performance and one American Idol I’m staring at right now.” Simon says, “I'm not trying to be biased, but I thought it was a brilliant song choice. You worked out what you wanted to do with it. Brilliant, brilliant performance. If you aren’t in the final next week it will be one of the biggest upsets of the competition." DAMN STRAIGHT.
2) Contestant's Choice: Aerosmith's "Cryin'"
While we're on the topic of Aerosmith, this is how you freaking do an Aerosmith song (RE: Danny Gokey & "Scream On").
Adam didn't change the arrangement up too much because he says that "the song is amazing in its own". Starts off well enough, then Bandzilla kicked in, drowning him out in the process. The background singer sounded like her mic's volume was up too high, making it seem like a vocal duel between her and Adam. I think Adam noticed the drowning out as well as he took his earpiece out midway through the performance. I do not like that Adam was being drowned out by Bandzilla and background singer! HELLO. ADAM'S MOMENT. LET THE MAN SING.
Rock wails galore! Not his most powerful performance (Nothing beats "Mad World". Nothing.) nor is it as good as "Whole Lotta Love" (comparison necessary because both songs are of the rock genre), but it was still a well-delivered vocal. DUH. ADAM LAMBERT? NEVER A BAD PITCHY MOMENT. Is it just me or did he look like he lost some of his swagger? OR IS HE MIFFED ABOUT BANDZILLA? DID THAT AFFECT HIS SWAGGER?! D:
Although it wasn't as powerful as "One", the more I listen to this, the more I love it. Whut? I think it just took some time for me to properly appreciate it.
Randy says, “You’re one of the best we’ve ever had on this stage! You should be a rock star that’s who you are.” Kara says, “Who hits those notes? Amazing! We’ll see you at the finals.” Paula says, “You set the bar so high in the sky. I hope you're getting frequent flier miles. (WHUT, PAULA?) We’ll be seeing you next week and many years after that.” Simon says, “I’m not going to suck up as much as the other three… it’s easy to assume you’ll sail through…But, I want everyone not to assume you’ll be there, but to vote for you because you deserve to be there. based on your talent.” Good call, Simon. That Bottom 2 scare thing must I think he's aware about the whole "voter complacency" thing after so many seasons of shock eliminations (RE: MELINDA DOOLITTLE), so it was a very smart move for Simon to remind people to vote.
And Adam is so humble, I can't stand it. He calls it an honor to be in the presence of Kris and Danny who are both really talented. WHO'S "ARROGANT" NOW?!?! OMG ILY. MARRY ME.

Overall: Very solid performances from all 3 finalists. Standout performance would be Kris with his version of "Heartless".
Prediction: Who's going home? No freaking clue. Adam is guaranteed a spot because he's the only one out of all 3 who's been consistently good all throughout the competition. Kris has been evolving over the entire course of the competition, so he stands a better chance to stay than compared to Danny who's been playing it pretty safe all season. BUT THEN I HAD A NIGHTMARE ABOUT ADAM GOING HOME WTF. SO NOT COOL. THEN I HAD ANOTHER NIGHTMARE ABOUT KRIS GOING HOME WTF. ALSO NOT COOL. D:
Actual Results: Stay tuned. Epic results show.
